5 Lures You Need to Have!

Like their name implies, SnagProof lures really are snag proof! With its origins dating back to the 1950s, SnagProof’s Frogs have stood the test of time. With 23 different styles of weedless lures, SnagProof has the lure for you to pull out a lunker from the thickest of weeds. SangProof’s lures follow a similar concept of a soft hollow body, with double hooks hugging the sides to keep it weedless and snag free. Having the ability to fish in the thickest of weeds without any snags or hang ups gives you access to lunkers. Casting right into Bass territory, the SangProof Frogs deliver results. Bass inhale the SnagProof Frogs and the two premium Gamakatsu hooks sink in for clean, strong hook sets.

The Bobby’s Perfect Frog has been perfected by Bobby Barrack, a Pro angler that’s been fishing with SnagProof’s Frogs for over 13 years and winning many tournaments in the process. Bobby would always modify his frogs before tying one on and sending it into the weeds. Now SnagProof has released Bobby’s exact frog, no more modifications required and more time for fishing!

Our first time out with the Bobby’s Perfect Frog and we were landing some impressive Bass. Needless to say we were impressed and now the SnagProof Frogs have a permanent home in our tackle box amongst our other arsenal. They are truly snag-proof, and you can confidently cast these lures into the weeds and not worry about snags. Cast them right into Bass country and get ready to lure them in!

We find that using a “Walk The Frog” technique and a slow retrieve delivers the most strikes. These lures are so easy to use, you’re sure to catch a lunker. We use SnagProof Frogs with a minimum 30 lb. braided line, since we are fishing in the thickest of weeds. We’ll alternate our retrieves, starting first by using a “Walk the Frog” (“Walk the Dog”) technique with a fast retrieve. Then we’ll switch to using a straight medium retrieve with intermittent pauses and light twitches to mimic a natural injured presentation.

Lucky Strike Bait Works has been creating great lures for the past 70 years, making them one of Canada’s oldest and largest tackle manufacturers. And once you fish one of their lures, you’ll understand why they’ve been around so long. Based out of Peterborough, Ontario, Lucky Strike continues to produce some of the best fishing lures available.

With the first cast of the Rattlin’ Wiggler, it’s obvious that the wobbling side to side movement is sure to deliver results. We like to use these lures over structure or a submerged weed bed to lure the big ones out of hiding. With a hollow cavity in the body and steel shot rattles, the Rattlin’ Wiggler makes it presence known and attracts curious fish to come out of the depths.

Using the Rattlin’ Wiggler is a cinch, just cast it out and begin to retrieve. The faster you retrieve the more the Rattlin’ Wiggler wobbles, the slower the retrieve the less wobbling. Varying your retrieve speed and adding an intermittent pop to your retrieve. To pop your lure, twitch your fishing rod tip upwards, this will cause the Rattlin’ Wobbler to dart creating an erratic motion that’s sure to attract.

Berkley is perhaps one of the most well-known companies when it comes to delivering fine fishing products. The Berkley Gulp! baits follow in this tradition of delivering great fishing excitement.

The Gulp! baits offer greater scent dispersion than normal soft baits. This is largely a result of the 100% natural ingredients that make up the Gulp! formula. The baits will actually begin to dissolve in water and release a scent trail which is sure to attract fish. You can expect more action when fishing with these baits!

When fishing with softbaits, it’s important to select the right hooks for the bait type you are using. Your local tackle shop can recommend the best choice based on the area and species you are fishing for. The same goes for retrieves, if you are fishing top water try to vary the pace of your retrieve. Adding in some twitching and some “Walking the Dog” action will also help. Jigging softbaits is also a good idea, depending on your fishing conditions. When it comes to softbaits, experiment with retrieves, color, and type to find out what works best for you.

Bass Pro, aside from being an angling paradise, also offers some great lures. Under their XPS (Extreme Performance Series), they carry a wide variety of quality lures. All of their lures feature, high-resolution body detail, which provide a very realistic look to their lures. Combined with the 3-D Lazer Eyes, fish are sure to mistake them for live baitfish. The rattle system, inside the body of the lures, helps to attract lunkers and provoke them into attacking. While the VMC premium hooks ensure that the surprised fish can’t spit the XPS lure.

For our Bass Pro XPS Crank Bait, we vary our retrieve speed depending on the depth of the area we are fishing. The Crank Bait dives deeper the faster the retrieve, we select a retrieve speed that will keep the lure about a foot off the bottom. Varying the speeds will allow you to cover various depths, while adding a pause to your retrieve will cause the lure to float slightly and dive once you start reeling again. Different lure types will offer different action and require different retrieves, visit your local Bass Pro Shop for some great tips!

YUM started out making fish attractants, which helped anglers catch more fish. Today YUM produces softbaits which are impregnated with their YUM attractant plus a shad enzyme. Known as their Live Bait Technology, their softbaits release a scent that simulates the enzymes released by injured or distressed baitfish. This scent triggers a feeding response in fish, giving you more opportunities to land lunkers.

YUM carries a wide selection of softbaits with LPT with salt. We chose their Zellamander, with a weedless Texas-style rig. The weedless setup, makes it perfect for casting into the weeds with relatively few snags. Best of all the shape of the Zellamander, creates a natural side-to-side action of the lure during your retrieve. So retrieve it fast or retrieve it slow, and you’ll get a varied action with is sure to send the Bass into a frenzy. For colour choice, YUM offers the Zellamander in a wide variety, so pick up a few packs and experiment on your lake.
