| Fishing in Urban Canada
For most people looking for great fishing often involves waking up at crazy hours in the morning and a few hours drive. True, this does often result in some fabulous fishing, but some great fishing can be found in many urban areas as well. In major cities across Canada, some great fishing can be found right in the heart of the city.
In Toronto, we have Lake Ontario right in the city with its plentiful fishing opportunities. Down by the shores near Ontario Place, you can land some good sized Northern Pike. The Ashbridges Bay Park, also offers some great fishing among the docks of the protected bay. For Bass fishermen, try the docks at the Toronto Islands and you’ll be amazed by the size and abundance of largemouths. Remember to be mindful of boats when fishing amongst the docks. Further to the west some great Salmon fishing can be caught during the salmon runs at the mouth of the Port Credit River. Similarly, to the East, the Rouge River offers similar fishing opportunities.
Western Canada, is famous for its great outdoors and the abundance of great fishing spots. However, people often overlook the fantastic fishing available within cities like Calgary and Vancouver. In Calgary, the Saskatchewan River runs through the center of the city. Besides providing a spectacular landscape, the river offers fishing right in the heart of Calgary. You realize that there must be some great fishing in Calgary, when you first arrive at the airport and see the statue of a fisherman in a fountain in the terminal building.
In Vancouver, outdoor activities in general are all within easy access to the city center. From skiing to hiking, all are accessible via a short commute on public transit. Skiers head to Grouse Mountain and great hiking can be found in Stanley Park. Stanley Park and the Sea Wall area of Vancouver also provides spectacular fishing opportunities. Fishing down by the sea wall, offers a great view of the mountains, float planes and cruise ships.
To find great urban fishing opportunities, visit your local tackle shops. Local tackle shops can offer great advice on urban fishing spots and the tackle required to land big fish. An important point to remember is that every province has their own set of fishing regulations and licence requirements. Most tackle shops are able to issue the required fishing licences and can inform you of any regulations you may not be aware of. Always refer to the fishing regulations published by the Ministry of Natural Resources of each province.
